Welcome back to Hump Day Update, the place to find out everything you need to know about what’s been going on in the entertainment world for the week. I’m Rachel A.G. Gilman. But enough about me, let’s get to the news.
ABC’s “The Middle” might be losing a member of the family next season after delaying the resigning of contracts. Charlie McDermott, who plays the oldest son, Axl, on the sitcom, has signed on to play the titular role in “Super Clyde,” about a fast-food worker looking for his true calling. Perhaps as Clyde, McDermott will actually be able to wear some pants over his boxers.
Rapper Lil B announced he will be giving a lecture at Carnegie Mellon University later this month, something he has already done at NYU as well as MIT, proving that you don’t need a college degree to teach college students. You just need to get into public feuds with other rappers and have a big social media presence.
While on tour in Sydney, Australia this week, One Direction’s Liam Payne caught a fan’s GoPro camera, which was tossed onto the stage during their performance, then proceeded to film band mate Niall Horan’s bum for some very YouTube worthy material. Add in some Ben & Jerry’s and you’ve got how I spent my Valentine’s Day….
Speaking of both V-Day and 1D, Taylor Swift released the music video for “Style,” her third single off last year’s “1989.” There’s been some internet debate over whether or not the video is more suiting for other songs on the record, but there is one thing we can all agree on: undeniably, the songs are all about the same thing – Harry Styles. Only Taylor could celebrate love by releasing a video so obviously directed at an ex and get away with it.
Brian Williams was suspended without pay for six months from NBC’s “Nighty News” after misrepresenting various news events during the 2003 Iraqi war, while Jon Stewart announced his retirement from “The Daily Show” by the end of the year. Personally, I always thought it was a little ironic that the college graduate was hosting the satirical show and the dropout was giving us the cold hard facts.
Drake dropped his highly anticipated new project, “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late.” Some have made the joke the album cover for the new release resembles a cry for help from a Chick-fil-A cow, but I’m more appalled Drake worked for six years and didn’t bother to run a spellcheck on the artwork.
Christina Aguilera will trade in her high heels for cowboy boots when she guest stars on ABC’s “Nashville,” which is great, because we all know the one thing country music needs most is another big-voiced, large-breasted blonde diva.
As “Glee” comes to an end this year, creator Ryan Murphy has a new project up his sleeve: “Scream Queens,” a comedy about a murder spree of females on a college campus. Now, everyone who has seen an episode of “American Horror Story” knows Murphy is a little messed up, but I’m a little scared to think about what could possibly be comedic about a mass murderer after college women.
And finally, you had two options for comedy this Sunday night: “The Bachelor” or SNL’s 40th Anniversary special. Whatever you chose, you got to see women dressed in crazy outfits with way too much make-up on and men saying stupid things. At least on SNL you know everyone’s just playing a character (they’re normal people in the daylight).
